Meet Wasim El-Haj

His client-centred approach combines deep industry knowledge with genuine care for each person’s unique journey. Whether working with students navigating their educational pathways or professionals seeking career transitions, Wasim is committed to providing the expert guidance and support needed to turn career goals into reality.

Wasim is a Professional Member of the Career Development Association Australia and Careers Advisers Association of NSW & ACT.

Wasim brings a unique combination of classroom and career guidance experience to his practice. Since 2004, he has been tutoring mathematics and science, transitioning to teaching in 2008, and specialising as a Careers Adviser since 2015.

His career guidance experience spans diverse educational settings, from supporting high-achieving gifted and talented students at academically-selective schools to working with adults navigating career transitions at university level. For seven years (2018-2025), Wasim served as a careers adviser at Sydney Girls High School, one of Australia’s top schools, where he championed supporting young women in their journey to success.

Wasim has also worked at the University of Sydney, where he has dedicated several years to supporting migrants and refugees with international qualifications, helping them enter the Australian workforce, change careers and continue their education. This includes assessment of overseas qualifications, IELTS, ISLPR and other English test requirements and helping people across years after coming to Australia.

His expertise covers the full spectrum of career guidance, from assisting students with apprenticeships and subject selection to preparing applications for medicine and other highly sought-after fields.

Wasim has extensive experience supporting students preparing for international colleges and universities from Year 9 onwards. His guidance encompasses the full spectrum of international applications, including SAT and ACT college requirements and suggestions, identifying Ivy League college admission requirements, reviewing essays, and navigating various scholarship opportunities and financial support.

His expertise extends to preparing students for Oxford interviews and understanding the specific requirements of prestigious international institutions. Between 2018 and 2024, students Wasim has supported have successfully gained admission to some of the world’s most renowned universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, and other leading institutions.

Wasim’s international experience includes supporting students with applications to Korean, Japanese, and Chinese universities, providing truly comprehensive global education guidance.

Beyond individual career counselling, Wasim has demonstrated exceptional leadership within the careers guidance profession. For five years, he led a careers adviser network that spanned across New South Wales, providing professional development and strategic guidance to colleagues throughout the state.

His commitment to on-going development and support of career professionals is evident through his extensive mentoring work, where he has guided many new careers advisers as they entered the profession. This leadership role has allowed him to shape best practices and contribute to the professional standards across the careers guidance sector.

This leadership experience ensures that Wasim brings a deep understanding of industry trends, professional development, and the evolving landscape of career guidance to every client interaction.

Wasim started “My Career Doctor” as his own blog as a personal project in 2017, sharing insights and experiences from his careers advising work. Initially a way to document his observations about the careers landscape, the blog allowed him to reach beyond his immediate client base and offer guidance to a wider audience.

Over time, the blog became the foundation for Wasim’s online careers counselling services. What started as a personal blogging endeavour has transformed into a platform for delivering professional guidance to others and career changers across Australia. This is the nature of careers, they are dynamic and evolving.
